"Shark Faces" A painting/drawing/collage in progress. This one has a long ways to go. Its title is definitely subject to change.

"Stolen by Apollo" A painting/drawing/collage in progress. I like this one as a poem:
Stolen by Apollo, they're kooky at home. Rocked by scandal.

Also, years ago i used to paint a lot of birds. I would make a big gloppy mess of paint and or whatever else was around and then "find" images of birds in the mess. I kind of did that a bit here, so far.

Art Basel Miami Beach & the other fairs with Look Into My Owl

Last week was the first time I attended the annual Miami art fairs and it was incredible! I had so many amazing art experiences, it's hard to even process them all... If you get the chance to visit any of these fairs, go! I already can't wait for next year.

I was there assisting Scott from Look Into My Owl with photos and video. He did an incredible job documenting the 2009 Art Basel Miami Beach fair as well as Art Miami and the NADA, SCOPE and Pulse fairs. Easier to Control, What You Missed & You Like This - in the When Titles Fail show @ NOWhere Limited

NOWhere Limited is hosting a quite spectacular (if I do say so myself) 10-artist group show, on view through July 26, 2009! When Titles Fail: the group show that can't be labeled features paintings and mixed media works by:

Heather Dalton, Chris Huang, Max Kauffman, Craig Koch, Scott Lickstein, Ian Millard, Angela Oaks, Maggie Ross, Greg Willson and me.

Unlike my other recent work, these 3 new pieces are not part of any series or planned "art experiments." I had absolutely no idea what the outcome would be for any of them: their imagery was pulled out of the ether, the materials I used to make them, and/or my subconscious. I had an immense amount of fun making messes work for these!

For Easier to Control I collaged some relics from my days in Baltimore that I've been dying to use since 1995... mainly a mis-printed piece of paper from a kite kit I used to sell when I worked at the Kite Loft and a flowery bit of old mattress. I also threw in a bunch of de-flowered silk flowers. The figures in this painting were "divined" from People and a few "womens'" magazines, except for Magnum PI (I dunno where he came from. His pseudo-serious macho image has been burned into my brain for a while, though, and it inspired the tone of this piece more than the materials I used for collaging.)

What You Missed is loosely about the futility of fashion, wall flowers, travel and the luck of the draw. Again, I used a scrap I've been saving for years. This time it's a piece from an old, fancy, silky 80's-ish blouse. I also took advantage of another mental image I couldn't seem to exorcise: cherries from a pre-packaged cherry pie circa 1998. Very mustache-y, dontcha think?

Ah, yes... fun with Facebook and People Magazine too. This one was the most difficult of these 3 pieces to figure out the future of... I did think of the name of this one before even starting to work on it. It might've had something to do with the difficulties. Also, the wildly colored pillowcase, see below, drove me crazy but I got it to work after it was muddied up a bit and buried under layers of stuff and now this might even be my new favorite out of the 3 for When Titles Fail.

Saturday, May 30th was such a great day in Ned! (That's Nederland, Colorado, near Boulder.) NOWhere Limited Gallery hosted a really fun opening party for the current show: "The Visual Art of Mark Mothersbaugh: RUGS! RUGS! RUGS!" Mark Mothersbaugh, well-known as a founding member of the innovative band DEVO, has been creating artwork in many forms for more than 3 decades. His love of visual art began in childhood, just after it was discovered that he was extremely nearsighted and legally blind. His first correctional glasses offered the young Mothersbaugh a new view of the world, fueling a lifelong infatuation with imagery and illustrations... READ MORE

Saturday also happened to be the day Tony Hawk was in town to dedicate Ned's new volunteer-built Nathan Lazarus Skatepark! Here's some pictures from both events...

Above: Mark was away working on a soundtrack for an upcoming film, but attended the opening via live video! It was so fantastic to chat with him... he talked about the projects he's working on (including a DEVO album, the first in more than a decade!) and showed us his lovely hotel room and mini-bar... He was so down-to-earth and charming!

Above: Here's Tony Hawk! It was raining and raining up until the point in this picture, but Tony hung in there a gave Ned a thrilling performance!

Above: More Tony! Most of my pictures are like this, through some strangers legs or from way up high, since it was so crowded! Alanna and I tried to start the chant "Toe Knee! Toe Knee!" a la the Pixies song, but alas, it didn't catch on... (but, you know, that song's about a superhero bike rider not a superhero skater, anyways...)

Influence Ward Shelley's drawings in his sleep

Ward Shelley's Who Invented the Avant Garde – and other half truths is on view at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn through May 17, 2009. The exhibit features intense painted drawings diagramming complicated relationships and timelines between people, places and events linked by an idea... like The Beats, which maps the "the lives, loves, and artistic output of the primary Beat Poets and their muses, using highway-like lines to trace their travels and travails.*" These drawings look fascinating and I hope to sometime get absorbed in them in person, but what really captured my attention about this show is the performance installation component of it: The Sleeper Experiment. *From the gallery's press release:

"From April 16 to April 30, during regular business hours, Mr. Shelley will be sleeping in the gallery inside a cabinet made for the purpose, and working during the night on drawings based on information provided by visitors.

The visitors, virtual or actual, are invited to contribute random input (in the form of words, short phrases, or images) that will become the basis for concept maps. This input will be read into the artist's mind by a speaking computer program during his sleeping hours. In the evening he will rise and begin drawing, leaving the results on view for the following day."

The Promised Land is stunning in "real life." Definitely worth checking out the larger pictures of Gordon Cheung's work on his web site: here It's a little more like being there in person than looking at the small pics above - you can see some of the stock listings and other details more clearly. Love the insane color palette, too. Looks like oil spills.

Gorgeous, dizzying and hypnotic! We were in there for a long time, mesmerized. The coverage of this show by Look Into My Owl (LiMO) made us really want to see these photos in person...

Good news: the current exhibit at NOWhere Limited Gallery in Nederland, Colorado has been extended! Scott and I kept hearing from visitors to the gallery that they wanted to come in and see this show again and/or let their friends know too... so, due to "popular demand" (and a fortunate flexibility in our show schedule) we'll be keeping Thawed Out: Visions of the Future on view through March 29th!

About the theme:
NOWhere Limited Gallery invited artists from around Colorado, as well across North America, to share their unique visions of the future for this fun group show, titled Thawed Out: Visions of the Future. Exhibited pieces include paintings, collage, drawings and sculpture. The town of Nederland, Colorado celebrates a festival called Frozen Dead Guy Days every March in honor of Bredo Morstøl, a "resident" who has been (rather haphazardly) cryogenically preserved. Experts in the cryonics field say Grandpa Bredo, affectionately known as the "Frozen Dead Guy," could conceivably be revived as soon as next century. The focus of this group exhibit is not the Frozen Guy, but rather the future... What will the world be like when the technology exists to "wake up" Grandpa Bredo and other "frozen" folks? A Jetsons-esque Utopia? Taken over by aliens? Or something even weirder?

Everything Must Go - Work in Progress

I snapped a few pictures while working on my future-themed piece to be included in Thawed Out: Visions of the Future, a group show at NOWhere Limited Gallery in Nederland, Colorado. The finished piece, titled Everything Must Go, can be seen: here

Below are some of the scraps of paper and junkmail that served as a starting point. Most of them didn't make it into the final painting.

Here is the canvas with just a few layers of paint and scratchiness. Some of the collage elements laid out but not yet attached, still deciding:

An alternate vision of the future:

Some more paint to make an ugly volcano that must end up un-visible... And look, it seems like a strange, dark cityscape is emerging from the dark purple under the orange scrap of paper at the left:

Close, but not exactly right... too much junk... remember, everything must go. I painted over most of the text that says "Final Days," but I think the finished piece (seen: here) still has the apocalyptic feeling I was hinting at, without being quite so literal. I was kinda sad to paint over the toes, though.

PROFONDO GIALLO by Scott Lickstein:
Scott Lickstein's Profondo Giallo project began as an obsession with movies, particularly those from the Italian pulp/horror film genre, known as Giallo. The artist, who studied video art under a professor from M.I.T., used a computer program to capture more than 20,000 individual frames from a vast assortment of movies on DVD. He then digitally combined and altered selected "stills" to form collaged images. Many of the Profondo Giallo images have previously been produced as prints and as purely digital art. For the latest version of the project, the artist rendered the digital mash-ups in paint, adding another layer of depth and strangeness to these striking compositions.

SAVE/PRODUCE by Elisha Sarti:
Elisha Sarti's SAVE/PRODUCE features The World According to Gooogle, a new series of collages on canvas. The source images for this series were derived from Google Image searches for subjective words like "pretty," "worst" and "perfect." The resulting canvases read as a bizarre yet captivating "pictionary."

Also exhibited in SAVE/PRODUCE are Elisha's large scale paintings: ENVY(Printed Line) and SAVE/PRODUCE. These two 7 foot x 7 foot paintings depict imagery taken from the materials the artist used to build their surfaces: saved junkmail and paperboard boxes that once contained food or other goods. The pictures and symbols in these works are based on advertisements and marketing designs so the colors, shapes and phrases have a familiar quality. They are recycled images on recycled surfaces, transformed by scale and collage into something new.

MAKE ART/TAKE ART:
Make Art/Take Art is a collaboration between Scott Lickstein and Elisha Sarti and perhaps...you! For this project, the artists created 12 black ink drawings on collaged backgrounds as well as a stack of "blank" collaged surfaces. The drawings are displayed in a grid formation; interested parties are invited to take one of the exhibited drawings in exchange for their own drawing, which must be completed on site using one of the provided blank surfaces and black ink marker or can choose to buy one instead. The drawings on display will be constantly changing, so that a participant may take a piece that has not been drawn by Elisha or Scott but by a random participant. For the duration of the exhibit, random drawings will also be available for sale (blind - you don't know which piece you will get) online for $15.

Junkmail Squared Series

The series Junkmail², the large 7ft x 7ft cardboard works and some of my digital collages are symbiotic. To make these pieces, I developed a process I think of as "recycling." First, images were pulled from printed advertisements with adhesive tape. The resulting transparent pictures were then enlarged digitally to make the giclee print series The Yes Era and Something Offer. The original tape segments appear as collage elements in the large paintings on paperboard Envy (Printed Line) and Save/Produce. From the bits of paper that are a by-product of this technique, I formed the small circular series Junkmail².

I wrote this almost 10 years ago to someone asking about Chore Boy:
Initially i was attracted to CB for his amazing scrubbing abilities -- maybe he could clean up the mess i'd made by collaging pieces of garbage and literally painting with dirt. Then i became attached to his packaging -- that bright orange box and his product description (copper scouring pads - which i changed to "cop our ads.") This sounds cheezy but i can't deny - he also had an astonishing resemblance to my imaginary childhood friend. I say "had" because they recently updated his look and now he seems like some kinda fake skater punk. That's one reason i can barely stand him anymore. Also, a lot of people mistake him for the Bob's Big Boy restaurant's mascot. I was embarrassed when i first found out about the crack pipe trick on an episode of Cops after i'd been working with CB for awhile...that connotation was not my intent. Even today i cringe just a little thinking about it. But overall, i am okay with it since most of the CB pieces incorporate debris i found on the street or in the trash as collage elements, and in most cities, as you point out, crack paraphernalia is sadly part of that garbage. Last year i showed some of them and this (drunken) guy was telling me that CB is worshiped by some obscure cult religion. Having learned my lesson about researching my imagery i tried to search online for anything about this to no avail. I have been trying to avoid CB in my recent work, but all the mystery surrounding him may force him to reappear someday.
